Throughout my life and career, I've learned that courage is the key to true leadership. Whether facing personal challenges or professional hurdles, having the bravery to take risks and make bold decisions has always been essential. From the disciplined ranks of the Air Force to the cutting-edge domain of AI adoption, my path has been illuminated by the daring choices to innovate, challenge the status quo, and embrace the unknown. Last year, my efforts in leading AI adoption showcased the impact of courageous actions. Join me as I share how this daring behavior not only opened doors but also drove groundbreaking change, setting the stage for a future shaped by courageous leadership.

Stepping Into the Unknown

Joining the Copilot launch and adoption team was akin to the early days of selling wireless devices and Bluetooth technology. I recall working tirelessly to influence a customer in the field to let go of his much larger-bag-phone and transition to a handheld cell phone. Likewise, convincing companies to invest in the first Bluetooth devices was a challenge. Even though these prototypes were not as refined as today's technology, they were innovative for their time. We needed people to use these devices, share their experiences, and tell their stories of how these early adopters embraced new technology. Embracing AI for our organization mirrored these experiences, highlighting how stepping into the unknown often paves the way for groundbreaking success. Using Gen AI in my personal world had already proven the possibilities, yet navigating the world of skeptics and changing mindsets posed additional challenges.

Challenging Ideas & Thinking Big

Courage in leadership means daring to question established approaches and thinking beyond conventional boundaries. By pushing for innovation and collaborating on next steps, I was able to make a significant impact. This willingness to challenge ideas and think big is essential for any leader aiming to drive change and foster a culture of continuous improvement.

Taking Initiative

Leadership is not about waiting for opportunities to come to you; it is about creating them. Reflecting on my work from over ten years ago, when I first encountered Brene’ Brown's "The Power of Vulnerability" TED Talk, I have carried these teachings with me throughout my career. Dr. Brown’s work was a part of the Leadership Development program I trained with a Fortune 50 organization; I learned that embracing vulnerability is crucial for authentic leadership. This principle has stayed with me and was further reinforced over the last year at my current Global Tech Organization through the Brene’ Brown Dare to Lead training.

By integrating these principles, I proactively help shape training, development, and AI adoption strategies, which not only advanced the project but also opened up leadership opportunities for me. Embracing vulnerability, as Brene Brown articulates, is essential: "Courage starts with showing up and letting ourselves be seen." This willingness to be vulnerable demonstrates true courage and can lead to remarkable personal and professional growth, recognition, and opportunity.

Recognition & Growth

I courageously asked for approval to lead a Community of Practice of Gen AI users and a volunteer group of AI Champions. Gaining approval for this work is a testament to the value of courage. These added leadership responsibilities allow me to drive AI adoption more effectively and foster a community of like-minded innovators. Recognition for courageous leadership reinforces the idea that stepping up and taking risks can lead to significant growth and success.

The Big Moment: Microsoft Ignite

Perhaps the most validating moment of my journey was being invited by our vendor partners to speak at Microsoft’s Global Conference, in 2024, called Ignite. This milestone underscores how consistent courage builds credibility and opens doors to new opportunities. Speaking at such a prestigious event was not just an honor; it was a clear indication that courageous leadership is recognized and rewarded.

At SavvyDavi.com, we are committed to helping leaders harness their courage to drive innovation and achieve extraordinary results. My journey to adopting AI is just one example of how courage can transform challenges into opportunities and vision into reality. Join us in embracing courageous leadership – the key to unlocking your full potential and achieving lasting success.

Guided by the Compass of Courage

Just as a compass provides direction and clarity on a hiking trail, courage acts as a guiding force in the journey of leadership. At SavvyDavi, we support the growth of the League of Extraordinary Women, a membership association committed to helping women leaders harness their courage to drive innovation and achieve extraordinary results. My journey to adopting AI illustrates that courage does not just create opportunities; it transforms careers. By sharing my experiences, I hope to inspire you to take bold steps in your own journey.

Challenging established norms, thinking beyond conventional boundaries, and embracing vulnerability can set the stage for transformative growth. Just as I leveraged courage to drive AI adoption and was later recognized at Microsoft Ignite, you too can use these principles to push for innovation within your own sphere.

Reflect on how you can challenge ideas and think big. By daring to question the status quo and proposing new solutions, you create a culture of continuous improvement. Taking initiative—whether by leading new projects or advocating for change—demonstrates leadership and opens up new opportunities.

Embracing vulnerability, as Brene’ Brown articulates, means showing up and letting yourself be seen. This principle is crucial for authentic leadership and can lead to remarkable personal and professional growth. When you lean into leadership courage, you not only advance your own career but also set an example for others, fostering a community of like-minded innovators.

In summation, the examples from my journey underscore the power of courage in leadership. By daring to be vulnerable and challenging the norms, you can promote innovation and propel your career to new heights. Let the compass of courage guide you as you navigate your path.
